The
Can Do Kids are the 2002-2003, 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006,2006-2007,
and 2007-2008 fourth grade classes at Peoria, IL's Irving Primary
School.
The Irving School students are culturally diverse: 79.4% Black,
10.5% Hispanic, and 9.5% White. However, 95.1% of Irving's students
are low-income rate students, coming from families receiving public
aid, live in institutions for neglected or delinquent children, are
supported in foster homes with public funds, or are eligible to receive
free or reduced price lunches. These Can Do Kids love school; attendance
rate is 94.1%, exactly the state average.
The Peoria Public Schools drop out rate is 9.2%, nearly twice as high as the Illinois rate of just 5.7%. However approximately 40% of the students who are to advance to Woodruff High School in Peoria are NOT graduating from high school. The Can Do 4:13 Scholarship Fund is targeted at reducing this widening education gap. After researching this over the last couple years, the Can Do Scholarship Fund's goal is to drive at least an 80% high school graduation rate, which would be a 20 percentage point increase. The ultimate Can Do goal is for at least 50% of each class to advance to college or technical training, where each Can Do 'grad' can use their $1,000 Can Do Scholarship. |

As part of Earth Day, Bradley University public relations students along with Better Earth Premium Compost sponsored The BETTER EARTH Day Celebration. All proceeds went to Can Do! Aluminum cans were also collected.
The flower pots were decorated with artwork from the students at Irving Primary School, and Better Earth donated the compost. The event included recycling games and an opportunity for kids to decorate their own flower pots. Recycle Today for a BETTER EARTH Tomorrow! |
